The Danish Red Cross has a new secretary general.
The choice has fallen on our current program manager for social initiatives, Lone Buchardt, who will officially take office on April 1st.
We are very pleased to announce that we have now completed the recruitment process and have found a new head of secretariat for the Danish Red Cross Capital. More than 80 people applied for the position, and we are proud that so many see RKH as an attractive place to work. The choice has fallen on our current program manager for social initiatives, Lone Buchardt.
It was a unanimous hiring committee that pointed to Lone as the new head of secretariat.
The chairman of the board, Mathias Mølsted Andersen, justifies the choice as follows: "Overall, Lone was the best of all the over 80 applicants who expressed their interest in the position. Lone has been chosen because she is ideally placed to build on the great work and practice that is so well underway in the Red Cross Capital. At the same time, we also believe that Lone will be able to lead us in new and exciting directions. We know Lone from several years of collaboration and know that she has the skills to lead the Red Cross Capital Secretariat into a future that is in many ways both exciting and challenging."
Lone is looking forward to her new role and says: "I am pleased with the trust the board and the hiring committee have shown me. We in civil society are faced with important tasks of stepping up and in the Capital Red Cross to continue to be prepared as a local emergency response actor, and I am therefore looking forward to continuing our good cooperation with municipalities, the national office and other local partners in my new role. With experience from both the social area, from the Capital Red Cross of course, and other social organizations such as Save the Children and the Consumer Council Think, and with a commercial background in marketing and sales, I look forward to bringing both into play to develop the entire organization together with the board and employees, so that together we can make an even greater difference for vulnerable people in the Capital."
Lone will start as head of secretariat on April 1.
Many thanks to the outgoing secretary
Lone takes over from our current head of secretariat, Pernille Scheel, who has been part of the Red Cross for over 26 years and has chosen to step down.
The chairman of the board of the Red Cross Capital, Mathias Mølsted Andersen, thanks Pernille for her tireless efforts in the Red Cross Capital over the many years: "Pernille has been a driving and unifying force for the Red Cross Capital for many years. You can't say Red Cross Capital without mentioning Pernille Scheel. I have had the pleasure of working closely with Pernille for the past 10 years as a board member and then chairman. And what I think characterizes Pernille's work is her great commitment, knowledge of our local conditions, infectious humor, and the will, ability and skill to take the Red Cross Capital to new places. We will miss Pernille's person. I wish her all the best with her future plans."

Help ensure good processes for both volunteers and seniors
As a follow-up volunteer, you will be the person who follows up with both volunteers and participants and provides them with safe and present contact.
Become a volunteer nowWhy is the role important?
Our walking buddies and visiting buddies create strong relationships between volunteers and seniors who need presence and companionship. To ensure that these matches work well, it is important that both volunteers and participants have a place to share their experiences, get support, and tell if something is not working optimally.
As a follow-up volunteer, you contribute to exactly this: you give us insight into how the programs are developing and help ensure that all parties thrive. Your role is therefore central to maintaining quality and creating good and safe programs – for both volunteers and participants.
What is the task about?
Of:
Calling older participants (65+) and asking how their match is working
Makes follow-up calls and emails to volunteers
Listens, acknowledges and gathers information about needs or challenges
Makes notes in our system and notifies the team leader if anything requires attention
Helps participants and volunteers get in touch with relevant initiatives and support opportunities when needed
Your most important role is to be a liaison – that is, you make sure that the right person takes over if the person you are in contact with needs sparring and support. The role is new, but the framework is clear, and you will receive a thorough introduction.
Who are we looking for?
We are looking for you who:
Is comfortable with conversations – both easy and slightly more difficult
Can create calm and presence over the phone
Is empathetic, listening and curious
Have the courage to use a computer and email (we will teach you what you need to know)
Able to work independently and follow through on tasks
Experience is not a requirement – the desire to talk to people in different life situations is the most important thing.
What do you get out of it?
A meaningful role where you strengthen the quality of our efforts
Experience with conversation techniques and contact work
Insight into how we match volunteers and participants
A present community where your ideas can be used
Time and place
Approx. 2–4 hours per week – flexibly from home or at our secretariat in Nørrebro.
In the start-up phase, it is an advantage that you work from the secretariat, where you will be provided with a telephone and computer.
Do you want to join?
If you can see yourself in the role and want to help create good processes for both volunteers and participants, please contact us via “Volunteer now” the button.
We are looking forward to hear from you!

Become a kitchen volunteer at our family camps
Can you whip up a loaf of sourdough? Do you like coming up with exciting recipes? Do you like cooking with others? Then volunteer on our kitchen team at our family camps in weeks 27 or 30 this summer.
Become a volunteer nowFamily camp in the Red Cross Capital
This summer we will be holding two family camps for the vulnerable families we work with and for at Red Cross Hovedstaden.
The basic idea behind the family camps is to strengthen the family network, give them positive experiences together and to create a space of peace, security and community. Everyone should leave with an experience of having been on holiday, and have something to talk about after the summer holidays. Something that many of the children do not otherwise have.
Meals at the camp are an important part of the community, and therefore we are looking for volunteers for our kitchen team, who together are responsible for the meals at the camp. We expect to have 15 families at each camp. The camp takes place over 5 days either in week 27 or week 30 in South Zealand at a secondary school right by the sea.
You will be part of a volunteer team with approximately 12-14 other volunteers, where there will be approximately 5 of you on the kitchen team with a volunteer kitchen manager.
Why volunteer on the kitchen team?
- You will help create unforgettable dining experiences for families who need a much-needed break from everyday life.
- You will become part of a cozy and fun kitchen team with other volunteers, where the DJ role takes turns, and where you together create the framework for the meals.
- It is an obvious opportunity to do an important piece of volunteer work for a limited period of time.
- You are guaranteed to sleep well the week after camp 😉
What are your role and tasks as a kitchen volunteer?
- Your most important task is to prepare the camp's delicious meals together with the kitchen team and the families.
- To create a lot of excitement, curiosity and joy by making good dishes.
- To create a framework, space and opportunity for children, young people and parents to help in the kitchen. Patience is therefore a virtue at a family camp 🙂
We are looking for you as…
- Passionate about cooking for many people and using the meal as a gathering point for positive experiences.
- Has a smile on his face and is good at keeping spirits high – even when there is a rush leading up to mealtime.
- Is patient and has an understanding of different food cultures.
- Is keen to collaborate with other volunteers and be part of a team.
What is expected?
- You can schedule a few meetings during the spring to meet with the other kitchen volunteers and make a plan together.
- You can participate in a whole family camp for 5-6 days either in week 27 or 30 in the summer of 2026.
- If you do not already have a food hygiene course, we will pay for you to take one. It is taken online and takes approximately 3 hours.

Thomas Arentoft Hinsby
My name is Thomas, I am 53 years old and live on Amager with my wife Pernille, and our 3 children aged 15, 13 and 10.
I am a trained social worker and have worked within the specialized disability field for more than 30 years. The last 20 years as a manager at various levels, both in Aarhus, Odense and today as the head of a large independent/private service in Copenhagen.
I have been appointed by the municipal council of Tårnby Municipality to be their representative in the Network House Kastruplundgade and it is, for me, an extremely meaningful position where I can use my skills and hopefully help make a difference.
I have always been concerned with what we as humans can do for each other and how we can help those who may need a helping hand.
Throughout all the years of my working life, where I have met many people, of many ages and with many different life circumstances, I have found that together we can do a lot and as long as there is humanity and the will to make a difference - there is hope!
