CHARITY SHOPS IN COPENHAGEN

At Red Cross Copenhagen’s charity shops, you can buy clothes, furniture, and unique items you won’t find anywhere else. Every visit is different—no shop is the same tomorrow as it is today. Once the beautiful skirt or the charming sofa is sold, we don’t have another one just like it. What we have is what we have—until it’s gone. But luckily, the opposite is also true: tomorrow, we’ll have something we didn’t have today.

With 15 second-hand shops, we are the largest in Copenhagen. Five of our shops are megastores where you can find furniture, music, films, clothes, shoes, accessories, children’s clothes, and toys. Seven of our shops focus on clothes, shoes, and accessories. Two of our shops specialize in second-hand fashion from young people to young people. And last but not least, we have a children’s shop offering clothing and equipment for kids.

When you shop at Røde Kors Hovedstaden’s second-hand shops in Copenhagen, you help us help others. The profits from the shops support our social initiatives and enable us to reach more young people, families, and elderly citizens—both in the capital and around the world.

You can get an overview of our shops here.

CHARITY SHOPS IN DENMARK

Red Cross opened their first charity shop in Denmark in 1975. The shop was located in Års in Vesthimmerland, and more soon followed. Today, Red Cross Denmark operates 260 charity shops across the country, run by more than 10,000 volunteers.

These shops generate an annual profit of over DKK 100 million, which goes toward social work in local communities and Red Cross emergency aid around the world.

CHARITY SHOPS TODAY

Attitudes toward shopping in charity shops have changed significantly in recent years, and this is reflected in the shops. In the past, buying second-hand clothing was often looked down upon, but today, buying your clothes second-hand is popular.

Part of this shift is due to increased awareness of climate change and sustainability, along with a desire to make a personal difference by choosing used items instead of new.

Second-hand shops used to be a place where socially vulnerable people could get things at a low price. That’s still the case—but the climate discussion has raised second-hand shopping to a new level, explains Tina Donnerborg, Head of Røde Kors Genbrug.

The shame that once surrounded second-hand clothing has now turned into pride, she adds:

Today, people post their great second-hand finds on Instagram or TikTok.
