What does it take to be a volunteer?
The most important thing is that you have the time, desire and energy to volunteer.
Depending on the activity you are interested in, there are some professional and personal qualities that are an advantage. If you are considering becoming a Visiting Friend for the Lonely, for example, it is good if you are faithful and stable - if you would like to volunteer in the Hospice Service, it is an advantage that you are robust and have experience in caring for dying people.
However, there are some activities that require special prerequisites (e.g. Samaritans)
Children must be able to safely participate in the Red Cross, and we make special efforts to protect them. This also means that we obtain child certificates for volunteers who are part of an activity that involves contact with children under the age of 15.
What can I do as a volunteer?
It depends on where and for whom you volunteer. There are often broad limits to what you can do.
As a volunteer, you help create security, calm, agency, hope and community based on the individual's needs, resources and interests and plan accordingly.
Some activities are based on one-on-one relationships. Other activities are about strengthening meaningful, active communities. Read more about our various efforts here.
Who do I help as a volunteer?
As a volunteer at the Red Cross Capital, you help to help the most vulnerable citizens in the capital area.
You can either help lonely seniors, vulnerable families with children, the mentally vulnerable, or help as an administrative volunteer at the secretariat, where you support the organization.
